The rainforest in the palm of your hand

The journey begins

The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a 133-acre zoo founded in 1966 and located in Los Angeles, California

Recently LA Zoo installed a new Rainforest of the Americas exhibition. The challenge was to help raise awareness of the new exhibition.

We began with focus groups, observed Zoo visitors and questioned customers before and after their visits.

The research which revealed a new location-specific app would lift the zoo experience and add an interactive layer to the customer experience.

Working with our partners at TE2 and Atelier we created an entirely new concept, to design a new “2nd Screen” experience for LA Zoo that utilises iBeacons positioned throughout LA Zoo’s new Rainforest Exhibit. As the users move around the exhibit and park, different content is unlocked relevant to their position.

As guests explore the physical exhibit they unlock exciting new content on their phone. The app was launched as the official app of the Los Angeles Zoo Rainforest of the Americas exhibit. It features maps, animal descriptions, fun facts, audio clips and conservation information.

Pushing technology to achieve project goals.

The app employs iBeacons – the latest in location-based Bluetooth technology – to unlock information as visitors move through the exhibit. You can find animal exhibits on the map view, experience the sound of an Oropendula song or explore the many zones of rainforest habitat. This app is designed to educate and entertain, to bring the rainforest to your smartphone and back home again. Easy to use, fun to interact with and beautiful to explore.

The project increased revenues and above all helped the zoo deliver a best in class customer experience.
